How to Choose the Best NDIS Day Program for Your Needs
Choosing a day program is a personal decision, and the NDIS expects your supports to reflect your goals and preferences.
Where to Start
A good starting point is to look at your plan goals and ask what you want your week to include more of, social connection, routine, community access, skill development, confidence, or something else. The right program should be able to explain how its activities relate to those goals.
Consider your Interests
Next, consider your interests and the environment that suits you. Some participants prefer busy group settings, and others do better with calm spaces or smaller groups. Because programs are not standardised by the NDIA, asking how a provider tailors activities and support levels is important. This includes asking about staffing ratios, whether 1:1 support can be provided within groups if needed, and whether staff can support specific communication or mobility needs.
Trial a Program
If possible, visiting or trialling a program is one of the most reliable ways to decide whether it fits. The NDIS does not require you to stay in a program that does not align with your goals or preferences. You can change providers if a program isn’t right for you.
Confirm Your Funding
Finally, confirm funding. Day programs are typically funded through plan categories linked to social and community participation. Still, the precise budget used depends on how the program supports your goals and how your plan is structured. A Support Coordinator, Plan Manager, or provider can help you confirm this before you start.
