How NDIS Makes Accessibility Possible

Accessibility is about removing barriers so disabled people can live safely, participate in community life, and exercise genuine choice. Many barriers are environmental rather than personal, for example, housing that isn’t safe to move around in, communication systems that don’t work for someone, or community spaces that assume a narrow range of bodies and needs. The NDIS can help reduce these barriers by funding supports that are reasonable and necessary for the participant’s disability-related needs and goals.

Accessibility at Home

For some participants, accessibility begins at home. The NDIS may fund home modifications where evidence shows they are needed to improve safety, access, or independence. This can include changes such as rails, ramps, or bathroom modifications, depending on professional assessments.

Assistive Technology

The NDIS may also fund Assistive Technology (AT). AT is a broad category covering tools or equipment that support daily living, mobility, communication, sensory needs, or safety. Whether AT is funded depends on the participant’s needs, evidence, and goals.

Personal Supports

Accessibility can also include funded personal supports. Many participants use daily living assistance or community participation supports so they can take part in life in ways that are safe and meaningful. Again, funding depends on individual circumstances and what is reasonable and necessary.

Supported Independent Living

Housing pathways for people with disability can involve NDIS supports in some cases, including Supported Independent Living (SIL) or Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) for those who meet eligibility requirements. These supports are only funded where the participant meets NDIA criteria and evidence supports the need.

If you have questions, we help participants understand what accessibility supports may apply to their plan, and how to pursue supports that align with their goals and evidence requirements.
