NDIS Housing Options: Shared Living vs. Independent Living

Under the NDIS, housing supports are individualised and only funded when they are reasonable and necessary. Two common living arrangements people explore are shared supported living and more independent living with in-home supports.

Shared living is often considered when participants benefit from living with others and receiving structured supports in a shared environment. Independent living may suit participants who want their own space and receive support in that home as needed.

The NDIS does not automatically fund a housing type, eligibility and funding depend on functional need, evidence, and goals. Some participants may qualify for SIL or SDA, while others may use Core supports to live independently with visiting assistance.
